Kayaking and Chill Time at the Georgia State Park

Updated: Mar 12

Are you ready to go out on another adventure? I found a really relaxing, full of nature campground to share with you. The George L. Smith State Park is a state park located in Twin City, Georgia. The state park is 3 hours east of Atlanta and just over an hour west of Savannah GA. It is not to close to the city or the shore, but there is no need to wonder off if you don’t want to.

I would like to share with you today, our experiences staying at the George L. Smith State Park in our travel trailer that we live in full time. We visited here in November 2021 and the weather was cold enough for a light coat or sweater. I liked that it wasn’t to hot, but great weather for a campfire too. Firstly, the cost of an RV site here is $35- $38 per night for a standard or premium RV campsite. The campsites include electric 30/50 AMP service, water hookups and dogs are allowed too. Each site is a different length, but the maximum length is 40 feet. There are pull through and back in sites that are available. We chose a back in site, it offered us a beautiful view of the water behind us and our neighbors even had access to go kayaking right from their site too. The campsite we were in offered extra room between our neighbors and fit two trucks and our RV with room to spare. There is a picnic table at the back of the site and a few steps to step down into the picnic area making it a separate space than the site itself. I also liked that they extended the concrete pad area to make it more comfortable. Space to put multiple chairs and a hammock for a nice relaxing view of the water and nature. There are also stairs leading down to the water.

Most commonly some of the activities that are available here are biking, trail hiking, boating, geocaching, kayaking, and bird watching. Fishing and kayaking are very popular here because there is such a large lake here. What is really cool, is they offer a park paddlers club membership for those sticking around Georgia. They offer great locations to go out on the water and see scenic views and get a t-shirt and certificate too. There is a covered bridge and mill to wonder around and a playground for the kiddos.

Now getting into a little more nitty gritty, the state park is very close to Twin city which offers a few small-town restaurant’s and a Piggly wiggly grocery store for your basic needs. About a 20-minute drive to Swainsboro there are more convivences such as Walmart, more restaurant choices, plenty of gas/diesel stations and shopping opportunities. We enjoyed our time hanging around the state park, but we did make our way to Atlanta for a day trip. We visited the Georgia Aquarium which was the most amazing experience we had yet. This aquarium is our favorite, it had a beluga whale, shark only tank and the open ocean with beautiful bright colored creatures inside. Id say, it is my happy place, I love sea creatures!

We had such a peaceful time here, great place to relax and get away from the hustle and bustle of life. I want to give this state park an 7/10 rating for accommodations, location, and activities around the area. This state park is worth visiting with your family and friends, a place to hang out to chill. It felt safe and inviting and a place we will come back too. Cheers to getting out there and spending the time you have for connections and fun! Safe travels!
